Microdosing Guide

A comprehensive guide to implementing a safe, effective, and intentional microdosing practice with psilocybin mushrooms.

What is Microdosing?

Microdosing refers to taking a sub-perceptual dose of psilocybin mushrooms – typically 1/10th to 1/20th of a standard dose. At these levels, you won't experience hallucinations or significant perceptual changes, but many people report subtle enhancements to:

  • Focus and concentration
  • Creativity and problem-solving
  • Emotional resilience
  • Energy and motivation
  • Connection to nature and others
  • General sense of well-being

"The effects of a microdose should not be about what you feel, but about what you don't feel."

Finding Your Optimal Dose

Everyone's body chemistry is unique, and sensitivity to psilocybin varies widely. What works perfectly for one person might be too much or too little for another.

Start Low and Go Slow

  • Begin with 0.1g (100mg) of dried psilocybin mushrooms
  • If you're particularly sensitive to substances, consider starting with 0.05g (50mg)
  • Wait at least 2-3 days before adjusting your dose

Signs Your Dose May Be Too High

  • Mild visual changes (colors seem brighter, patterns more noticeable)
  • Difficulty focusing on tasks
  • Feeling "spacey" or disconnected
  • Physical sensations like tingling or warmth
  • Mild emotional intensity or anxiety

If you experience any of these effects, your dose is technically no longer a microdose. Reduce your amount by 25-50% for your next dose.

Signs Your Dose May Be Too Low

  • No noticeable changes after 2-3 doses
  • None of the subtle benefits typically associated with microdosing

If you feel nothing after several doses, you may increase by 0.02-0.03g increments until you find your sweet spot – but always stay below 0.2g to maintain the microdose range.

Recommended Protocols

There are several established protocols for microdosing. We recommend starting with one of these approaches:

The Fadiman Protocol

Named after psychedelics researcher Dr. James Fadiman, this schedule follows:

  • Day 1: Dose day
  • Day 2: Observation day (afterglow effects)
  • Day 3: Normal baseline day
  • Day 4: Begin cycle again (dose day)

This creates a pattern of dosing every 4th day, which helps prevent tolerance buildup.

Every Other Day

  • Day 1: Dose day
  • Day 2: Non-dose day
  • Day 3: Dose day
  • And so on...

This protocol is more straightforward but may lead to faster tolerance buildup.

Weekday Focus

  • Monday-Thursday: Dose days
  • Friday-Sunday: Off days

This approach aligns microdosing with work or study schedules.

For Your First Month: We recommend following the Fadiman Protocol for your first month to carefully observe effects while minimizing tolerance.

Tracking Your Journey

One of the most important aspects of successful microdosing is careful tracking. Subtle effects are easily missed without intentional observation.

Daily Entries

  • Date and time of dose (if applicable)
  • Dose amount
  • Quality of sleep the night before
  • Mood before dosing (scale 1-10)
  • Energy level before dosing (scale 1-10)
  • Notable effects throughout the day
  • Overall mood and energy at day's end
  • Any unusual experiences or insights

Weekly Reflection

At the end of each week, take time to reflect on patterns:

  • How did dose days compare to non-dose days?
  • What activities felt different?
  • Did you notice changes in your interactions with others?
  • Were there changes in your creative output or problem-solving?
  • How did your emotional resilience feel throughout the week?

Best Practices for Optimal Results

When to Take Your Microdose

  • Early morning is ideal for most people (with or after breakfast)
  • Consistent timing helps with tracking effects
  • Allow at least 1 hour before important meetings or high-stress situations (for your first few doses)

Complementary Practices

Microdosing works best when combined with other wellness practices:

  • Regular physical movement or exercise
  • Mindfulness or meditation practice
  • Time in nature
  • Proper hydration
  • Quality sleep
  • Nutritious diet
  • Journaling
  • Creative expression

What to Avoid

  • Alcohol (especially on dose days)
  • Excessive caffeine
  • Other psychoactive substances
  • High-stress environments (during initial doses)

Safety and Responsible Use

Store Properly

  • Keep in an airtight container
  • Store in a cool, dry place away from light
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets

Legal Considerations

Psilocybin remains a controlled substance in many jurisdictions. Be aware of your local laws and regulations.

Not for Everyone

Microdosing may not be appropriate for people with:

  • History of psychosis or severe mental illness
  • Severe cardiovascular issues
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Important Safety Note:

This guide is for educational purposes only. Always research thoroughly and consider consulting with a healthcare professional before beginning any new wellness practice.
